Inspired by Wang Xizhi's renowned calligraphy, 'The Lanting Xu' (Preface of the Orchid Pavilion), we at nesso.design studio created Lanting—a project that bridges ancient literature with modern design. Our space captures the poetic imagery of 'flowing water, curving water, cultivating bamboo in the forest,' fostering serenity and contemplation.
Drawing from the 'Preface of the Orchid Pavilion', which describes high peaks, lush forests, tall bamboos, and a clear, swift stream, we incorporated these elements into our design. Fluid lines guide visitors through the space, mimicking the natural flow around the pavilion.
We reimagined traditional elements with modern materials, reflecting ancient literature while embracing contemporary aesthetics. The exterior design, inspired by scroll paper, unfolds gracefully, and the ground features Japanese-style dry mountain water elements, grounding the space in tranquility.
Circular elements symbolize the 'round and harmonious state' of Buddhism, embodying the idea that 'goodness is like water.' This flowing water motif runs through the entire space, creating a sense of continuity and peace.
Our bamboo forest seamlessly connects with the outer structure, blending natural and designed elements. It forms a living boundary that enhances the space's serene atmosphere, merging tradition with modernity in a homage to cultural heritage.
