In the bustling heart of Shanghai, HK Plaza is now home to a unique cultural landmark: the new showroom for Elica, the renowned Italian brand known for its innovative kitchen hoods and induction hobs. Established in 1970, Elica S.p.A. has consistently pushed the boundaries of design and functionality in the kitchen, making a significant impact on how we interact with our culinary spaces. The 2024 completion of this showroom marks a significant milestone, showcasing the seamless blend of Italian and Chinese aesthetics crafted by us at nesso.design, who have long had roots in both China and Italy.

Inspired by the quote from Italian chef Cristiano Tomei, 'Only Italians, Chinese, and a few other countries value food as a cultural expression; all the others eat just to keep them standing,' we delved deep into the social and cultural significance of dining in both Italy and China. This philosophical underpinning manifests in every aspect of the showroom, creating a space where culinary art and cultural expression coexist harmoniously.

The showroom's design features a distinctive blend of materials and motifs from both traditions. Travertine marble, a hallmark of Italian architecture, forms the backbone of the exhibition area, symbolizing the granite tradition of Italian design and cuisine. This luxurious material contrasts beautifully with the grey terracotta, red elements, and intricate details characteristic of Chinese design, reflecting the rich heritage and craftsmanship of Asia.

One of the standout features of the showroom is the integration of Feng Shui principles, a nod to the importance of balance and harmony in Chinese culture. The selection of materials 'fire, water, wood, metal, and earth' is meticulously balanced to create a space that feels both grounded and dynamic. Elica’s signature stovetops and hoods are represented as elements of fire and water, respectively, while red wood, golden design elements, and travertine bring together the remaining elements in a visually and emotionally cohesive environment.

Adding another layer of cultural depth, we incorporated sunburst frames inspired by ancient Chinese furniture and ornamentation. These frames, characterized by intricate decorations, create dynamic shadow and light effects, enhancing the showroom's visual intrigue. This aesthetic choice pays homage to the propeller motif from which Elica derives its name, symbolizing motion and innovation through four curvilinear elements that chase each other, forming a unique, randomized texture designed specifically for this space.

Our design not only celebrates the culinary and cultural richness of Italy and China but also redefines the retail experience. The showroom is more than just a display of products; it is a testament to the power of design in bridging cultures and creating meaningful, immersive experiences. As visitors walk through the space, they are invited to explore, reflect, and engage with the subtle interplay of form, material, and cultural narrative.
